K.I.N.D. Therapy
(Kids In Need of Dogs)

The KIND Therapy Program at Paws & Pals is a cornerstone of our mission to provide preventative therapy and promote social-emotional wellness among at-risk and underserved youth. K.I.N.D. stands for Kids In Need of Dogs, and our program is designed to address the mental health challenges faced by children and teens in Jackson County. By offering evidence-based therapeutic interventions, we aim to foster recovery, healing, and hope.

Program Goals:

  • Promote Emotional Well-being: Our program focuses on enhancing emotional resilience and self-awareness among participants, helping them to navigate life’s challenges with confidence.
  • Encourage Positive Relationships: Through group and individual therapy sessions, we aim to build supportive peer networks and strengthen family connections.
  • Develop Coping Skills:  Participants learn effective strategies for managing stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues, empowering them to thrive in their daily lives.
  • Foster a Safe and Inclusive Environment: We prioritize creating a welcoming space where children and teens feel heard, respected, and understood.

Program Structure:

Our K.I.N.D. Therapy Program combines individual, group and family therapy sessions and case management, tailored to meet the unique needs of each participant. Led by experienced therapists, the program incorporates various therapeutic approaches alongside one of our trained therapy dogs.

Here is a list of our current therapy services:

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This therapy focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. It helps youth develop coping skills and problem-solving strategies.

  • Play Therapy

Especially effective for younger children, play therapy uses play as a means for children to express their feelings and experiences. It allows therapists to observe and understand a child’s emotions and thoughts.

  • Art Therapy

This approach uses creative activities like drawing, painting, and sculpting to help youth express themselves and process emotions in a non-verbal way.

  • Family Therapy

Involving family members, this therapy aims to improve communication and resolve conflicts within the family unit. It helps families develop healthier dynamics and support systems.

  • Group Therapy

This involves therapy sessions with peers facing similar issues. It provides a supportive environment where youth can share experiences, gain insights, and develop social skills.

  • Mindfulness-Based Therapy

This approach encourages youth to focus on the present moment through mindfulness exercises, which can help reduce stress and enhance emotional regulation.

  • Trauma-Focused Therapy

Designed for youth who have experienced trauma, this therapy helps them process and make sense of traumatic events, aiming to reduce trauma-related symptoms.

  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

This is a goal-oriented therapy that focuses on finding solutions in the present and future, rather than dwelling on past problems.

Each type of therapy aims to provide a safe and supportive space for youth to explore their feelings, develop coping skills, and build resilience. The choice of therapy often depends on the individual needs of the child or teenager and the specific challenges they are facing.

ANIMAL-ASSISTED THERAPY

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) incorporates the use of animals as a part of therapeutic interventions to improve individuals’ physical, social, emotional, and cognitive functioning. Here are some benefits of animal-assisted therapy:

Emotional Support and Stress Reduction: Interacting with animals can help reduce stress and anxiety levels. The presence of an animal can provide comfort, leading to a decrease in cortisol levels and an increase in the release of endorphins, promoting a sense of well-being.

Enhanced Social Interaction: Animals can serve as social catalysts, encouraging communication and interaction. For individuals who struggle with social skills, animals can help break the ice and facilitate more relaxed and open conversations.

Improved Mood and Mental Health: The companionship of animals is known to boost mood and alleviate symptoms of depression. Animals offer unconditional love and acceptance, which can greatly improve an individual’s emotional state.

Increased Motivation and Engagement: In therapeutic settings, animals can motivate individuals to participate more actively in their treatment. The presence of an animal can make therapy sessions more enjoyable and engaging, particularly for children and adolescents.

Development of Empathy and Nurturing Skills: Caring for and interacting with animals can help individuals develop empathy and nurturing skills, as they learn to understand and respond to the needs and emotions of the animal.

Reduction of Loneliness: Animals provide companionship and can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, especially for those who have limited social interactions or are in long-term care facilities.

Physical Benefits:  For those with physical disabilities or challenges, activities involving animals can encourage physical movement and coordination. Walking, grooming, or playing with animals can improve motor skills and increase physical activity levels.

Improved Self-Esteem and Confidence: Successfully interacting and bonding with an animal can boost an individual’s self-esteem and confidence, fostering a sense of accomplishment and capability.

Therapeutic Focus for Trauma and Anxiety: Animals can provide a calming presence and help individuals process trauma or anxiety. They offer a safe and non-judgmental space for individuals to express their feelings.

Overall, animal-assisted therapy offers a unique and effective way to enhance traditional therapeutic practices, providing numerous psychological and physiological benefits to individuals of all ages.
